History
Also written with the older character form as Shohoin, the temple has been handed down in Taito Ward as an independent temple of the Tendai school. Tendai is a major current of Japanese Buddhism founded by Saicho, and while inheriting its teachings the temple chose to operate independently. Within the Shitamachi belt of faith that continues from the Edo period, it has served the memorial and prayer needs of local people. For its detailed origins and the history of its halls, it is best to check the official guidance or the on-site signage.

A Tendai-affiliated independent temple like Shobo-in combines the freedom of not being bound by sect hierarchy with the approachable warmth of a community temple.
