Overview
Jōfuku-ji is a temple of the Chisan school of Shingon Buddhism, located in Hachiōji, in the western part of Tokyo. Tucked into the hills west of central Hachiōji, it offers a quiet place to pray away from the bustle of the city. As the name Jōfuku (pure blessing) suggests, it has long been visited by local people who come with a clear heart to wish for good fortune. The esoteric atmosphere of Shingon prayer lingers here, and the green-wrapped grounds change with each season.

History
The temple belongs to the Chisan school of the Shingon sect, carrying on the esoteric tradition founded by Kōbō-Daishi Kūkai. The Chisan school has its head temple at Chishaku-in in Kyoto and counts many branch temples across Japan. Jōfuku-ji stands as one such temple in western Hachiōji, preserving rituals of fire offering and prayer. Because detailed records of its founding and successive abbots are limited, visitors are encouraged to check official notices on site for accurate information.
Access
The temple lies at roughly 35.667°N, 139.248°E, in the western area of Hachiōji. From Hachiōji Station on the JR and Keiō lines, most visitors head west by local bus or car into the hills. As the surrounding roads can be narrow and hilly, it is wise to confirm bus timetables and parking availability through official information in advance.
Best season
The fresh green of spring and early summer, and the coloring leaves of autumn, show the hillside grounds at their most beautiful. For quiet, a weekday morning with few visitors is ideal.
