Overview

Ukega Mine (Ukegamine) is a mountain rising to 1,009.2 meters in Kaiyo-cho, Kaifu District, Tokushima Prefecture. Kaiyo-cho, in the southern part of the prefecture, is a nature-rich town facing the Pacific Ocean, and Ukega Mine sits in its inland area, embraced by the greenery of the Shikoku Mountains. Though the town lies close to the sea, stepping into the hills reveals deep forest, making this a place where both ocean and mountain can be enjoyed.

Highlights

  • Views of the Shikoku Mountains from the 1,009.2-meter summit
  • Deep forest and nature spreading across inland Kaiyo-cho
  • A genuine mountain atmosphere in a town close to the sea
  • Quiet, uncrowded surroundings for a relaxed visit

History

Ukega Mine is one of the peaks forming the mountainous terrain of southern Tokushima's Kaiyo-cho, part of a landscape shaped over long ages across Shikoku. Just above 1,000 meters, the mountain has, together with the surrounding ranges, supported local life and served as a watershed. Detailed records of climbing customs or worship are largely left to local archives, so visitors are encouraged to check the latest details through official sources.

Access

The mountain lies inland in Kaiyo-cho, Kaifu District, Tokushima Prefecture, at roughly 33.71 degrees north and 134.27 degrees east. It is usually reached by car heading toward the hills from the center of Kaiyo-cho. Public transport is limited, so a rental car or private vehicle is convenient. Mountain conditions vary by season and weather, so confirm trailheads and routes in advance via official information.

Best season

Early summer, with its dazzling fresh greenery, through autumn, with its clear and pleasant air, is well suited to hiking and enjoying nature. Because the summit exceeds 1,000 meters, winter can bring cold and possible snow, making proper gear and information essential. The mountain shows a different face in each season.

Did you know?

💡 As the figure 1,009.2 meters suggests, Ukega Mine just qualifies as a member of the thousand-meter peaks. Though it belongs to Kaiyo-cho, a town facing the Pacific, the air near its summit feels like deep mountains far from any coastal town.
