History
Takamaru-yama, sitting at the boundary of the two towns of Kamikatsu and Naka as a natural landmark, has long been tied to the life and faith of this region. As part of the Chubu Sankei Prefectural Natural Park and a designated peak among the Hundred Famous Mountains of Shikoku, the value of its nature has come to be widely recognized. In recent years its eastern slope has been conserved and developed as the Tokushima Prefectural Takamaru-yama Millennium Forest, with ongoing efforts to protect and pass on its precious forest ecosystem to future generations. That a primeval forest has survived here, spared the waves of development, is itself the clearest testament to this mountain's history. Access
Takamaru-yama lies in the south-central part of Tokushima Prefecture, on the boundary between Kamikatsu Town and Naka Town. Public transport is limited, so it is common to reach it by rental car or private vehicle from the Tokushima city area. You head to the trailhead via forest roads from the centers of Kamikatsu or Naka; because the mountain roads are narrow and winding in places, plan your drive with ample time. Because the passability of the forest road to the trailhead and available parking can change with the season and weather, please confirm official information before setting out.
Best season
To fully enjoy Takamaru-yama, early summer, when the fresh green beech forest gleams, and autumn, when it turns to brilliant foliage, are especially recommended. The primeval beech woods of the Millennium Forest reveal different beauty in the budding season and in the season of golden leaves. As a mountain exceeding 1,400 meters, its temperatures are lower than the lowlands, and even in summer mornings and evenings feel cool. In winter, snow and ice raise the difficulty, so careful judgment based on your equipment and experience is essential. In any season, plan according to the weather and your own fitness.
