
Overview
Konpira Shrine stands in Seimi-cho, Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, at the foot of Mt. Bizan. Affectionately known as the Konpira-san of Seimi, it is counted as one of the three Konpira shrines of Tokushima Prefecture. History
Enshrining Konpira, guardian deity of the sea, this shrine has drawn faith as one of the three Konpira shrines of Tokushima, together with Miyajima in Kawauchi-cho and Kizu in Muya-cho, Naruto City. Seated at Seimi-cho at the foot of Mt. Bizan, it has long been close to local life under the name Konpira-san of Seimi. The great stone lantern, said to be the largest in Japan, conveys the deep devotion offered to this shrine.
Access
The shrine is enshrined near 34.06 N, 134.55 E in Seimi-cho, Tokushima City. On the south side of the city at the foot of Mt. Bizan, it enjoys good access from the center. It pairs easily with sightseeing on Mt. Bizan, but for parking and the nearest transport it is reassuring to check the official information in advance.
Best season
Set against the green of Mt. Bizan, the shrine is especially beautiful in the seasons of fresh foliage and autumn color. The New Year visit and festival days bring the lively bustle typical of a Konpira-san. To gaze up at Japan's largest stone lantern at leisure, the gentle sun of spring or the clear air of autumn is ideal.
