History
The name Todoroki, meaning to roar or resound, is said to come from the powerful water thundering through the gorge. The scenic valley nurtured over ages by the waters and forests of the Kareitani River has long been bound up with local faith and daily life, and shrines connected to water have been enshrined around the main fall. Its selection for Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls and the 88 Waterside Spots of Shikoku attests to the high regard for its scenery and water environment.
Access
Located at about 33.69 degrees north, 134.25 degrees east, the falls lie along the Kareitani River in Kaiyo-cho in southern Tokushima Prefecture. Visitors usually drive from the southern Kaifu area to the mouth of the gorge and follow the walking trail from one cascade to the next. Since mountain paths and trails change with the weather, come in sturdy shoes and check the latest access and trail conditions via Kaiyo-cho's official information.
Best season
Early summer (May to June), when the sound of water plays against fresh greenery, and autumn (around November), when the gorge turns to brocade, are the peak seasons. After rain the flow swells and grows more dramatic, but take great care with footing when the water is high. Summer also draws those seeking the coolness of the gorge.
