Overview
The Yano Site spreads across the Yano, Naka, and Nishi-Yano districts of Kokufu-cho in Tokushima City, and is a complex archaeological site where human activity continued from the Jomon period through medieval times. Although it is not formally designated as a historic site, the Yayoi-period bronze bell known as the “Yano dotaku” unearthed here, together with 160 artifacts from the late Jomon period, are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Rather than a flashy attraction, it is a quiet place for a reflective walk through land layered with many eras.

History
Excavations at the Yano Site have revealed relics and features spanning the Jomon, Yayoi, and medieval periods, showing that people lived here over a very long span of time. Especially notable is the Yayoi-period bronze bell, the “Yano dotaku,” a valuable record of the ritual life of that age. Along with it, 160 artifacts from the late Jomon period are designated Important Cultural Properties, testifying to this area's role as a hub of ancient culture in eastern Shikoku.
Access
The site lies in Kokufu-cho, Tokushima City, at roughly 34.06°N, 134.47°E, within the Tokushima Plain. It sits in the Kokufu district toward the Akui River from central Tokushima, and travel by car is convenient. The surroundings are a calm mix of homes and farmland, and some of the excavated items may be kept or displayed at museums and related facilities. To walk outdoors and take in the feel of the land, spring and autumn, with their clear air and easy walking, are the most comfortable. Summer brings strong sun and humidity, so carry water and guard against the heat; winter winds are cold, so dress warmly to savor the ancient traces left on this plain at a relaxed pace.
