Overview

The Kyu-Yoshino River is a principal river in the Yoshino River system of Tokushima Prefecture. Formed where the former main channel of the Yoshino River branched off near its mouth, it flows gently across the eastern Tokushima Plain and empties into the Kii Channel. Passing through town, farmland, and brackish waterside, it is an everyday river ideal for easy strolls along its embankments.

Highlights

  • A gentle Yoshino-system waterscape crossing the Tokushima Plain
  • The tidal brackish lower reaches where waterbirds gather
  • Open riverbanks perfect for walking along the embankment
  • Calm river views seen from the window of a passing train

History

As its name (meaning 'old Yoshino') suggests, the river follows a former course of the Yoshino River, reaching its present form through flood-control works and shifts in its channel. As part of the Yoshino River system, it has long carried water across the downstream Tokushima Plain. For the dates and details of specific engineering works, it is best to consult official sources.

Access

The Kyu-Yoshino River runs through the eastern Tokushima Plain (around 34.14°N, 134.62°E), with its mouth facing the Kii Channel. It is easy to reach from Tokushima City and nearby towns, and rail lines and roads run alongside parts of it. You can approach the water from bridges and embankments; check official information for the most accessible spots.

Best season

Spring to early summer, when the embankment greenery shines, and clear-aired autumn are pleasant for riverside walks. In summer many seek the cool of the water, and waterbirds gather in the brackish reaches. During the rainy season and typhoons, watch water-level information and enjoy the river within safe limits.

Did you know?

💡 The name Kyu-Yoshino refers to the 'old course' split from the Yoshino River's main channel, and its lower reaches form a tidal, brackish zone. Some stretches can be viewed from the windows of a local train line.
