History
Thanks to its position overlooking the Naruto Strait, Ōge Island has developed as a key point of transport linking Shikoku and Honshu. The Ōnaruto Bridge spans the island, and it is also connected to the Honshu side by road. In addition, the Naruto University of Education is located on the island, giving it a role as a place of learning. The way whirlpool tourism, bridge access, and an educational institution coexist here well captures the island's present character.
Access
The island lies at roughly 34.21°N, 134.63°E, within Naruto City. Linked to Awaji Island (toward Honshu) by the Ōnaruto Bridge and connected to mainland Shikoku via the road network, it is easy to reach by car. Close to bases for whirlpool sightseeing, it fits naturally into a touring itinerary when visiting Naruto. Check official sources for specific transport options.
Best season
The Naruto whirlpools are largest during the spring and autumn spring-tide periods, so those seasons are the most rewarding for viewing the Ōnaruto Bridge and the whirlpools from Ōge Island. The scenery of sea and bridge can be enjoyed year-round, but choosing a day of strong tides makes the sight all the more powerful.
