History
Ishima has long made its living from fishing, blessed with rich fishing grounds. With all but the settlement folded into the Muroto-Anan Coast Quasi-National Park, its natural scenery is protected. Lying at Shikoku's eastern edge, it sometimes affords a view of Honshu to the east on clear days. For detailed island history and annual events, it is best to check on-site or official information.
Access
Ishima lies off the coast of Anan City (around 33.85°N, 134.82°E) and is reached by ferry from a port on the mainland side. As the easternmost island of Shikoku, it is surrounded by many reefs. Sailings are limited, so always confirm the round-trip ferry timetable via official information in advance.
Best season
Spring to early summer, when the sea is calm and views are clear, and autumn are the most comfortable times for exploring the island. In summer the water is highly transparent, ideal for tide-pool play and the island's fresh seafood. Winter seasonal winds can rough up the sea and cancel ferries, so checking weather and service status is essential.
