Overview

Kobo-ji is a temple of the Tendai school in Hongo-cho, Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture. As a place of prayer in the Tendai tradition, whose head temple is Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei, it stands quietly within a town on the plain near the Omoi River and the Watarase retarding basin. Different in flavor from Pure Land temples, it is an old temple of Oyama where the solemn Tendai flame is handed down.

History

Kobo-ji has carried the Buddhist flame at this Hongo-cho as a Tendai temple. The Tendai school was founded by Saicho and is marked by a comprehensive teaching that centers on the Lotus Sutra while embracing esoteric practice, precepts, and meditation. Kobo-ji has been preserved within this Tendai tradition, walking alongside the history of the town of Oyama. For its founding year and details of any revival, it is surest to check on-site guidance or official sources.

Access

The temple is in Hongo-cho, Oyama, Tochigi, near 36.31 degrees north and 139.80 degrees east. Oyama Station, a transport hub where the JR Utsunomiya, Ryomo, and Mito lines meet, serves as the base, and it is convenient to go by car or bus from the station. It is also fairly easy to reach from interchanges on the Tohoku Expressway, and the surroundings blend city and farmland in good measure. Please confirm visiting hours and parking through official information.

Best season

Set in the midst of the Kanto Plain, it is easy to visit all year, with the mild seasons of spring and autumn especially suited to worship. On clear days the sky spreads wide and the calm precinct of a Tendai temple shows all the better. Summer brings the humid heat of the plain and winter the dry cold wind, so dress for the season for a comfortable visit.

Did you know?

💡 Within the same Tochigi, while the Pure Land temples of Sano and Sakura rest on the nembutsu of Amida, Kobo-ji stands in the different lineage of the Tendai school. Tendai connects to Mount Hiei, called the mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism, with a tradition of learning and practice that produced many sect founders. Touching this Tendai character at the transport hub of Oyama is the appeal of this temple.
