Overview

Myōkin-ji is a temple of the Nichiren school of Buddhism located in the Nakamachi district of Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. Bearing the mountain name Hōkō-zan and the cloister name Seikō-in, it maintains its precincts in a quiet corner of the city. As an old temple that carries on the calm dharma light characteristic of the Nichiren school, it welcomes visitors gently despite standing within central Utsunomiya, and is notable for preserving a treasured historic relic that draws interest for both its faith and its culture.

Highlights

  • A venerable Nichiren-school temple called Hōkō-zan Seikō-in
  • Enshrines the Oshidori Great Mandala said to be in Nichiren's own hand
  • A dharma lineage tracing to the grand head temple Honkoku-ji (Rokujō lineage)
  • Precincts resting quietly within central Utsunomiya

History

Myōkin-ji belongs to the Nichiren school, and its former head temple is said to be Honkoku-ji, a grand head temple of the school in the Rokujō lineage, connected through the Konishi dharma lineage. The temple enshrines a mandala said to be in the authentic hand of Nichiren, known as the Oshidori Great Mandala, and has long protected and passed down this precious dharma treasure tied to the school's founder. The current chief priest is Nichiji Nozawa, the 37th in succession, so the dharma light continues to be handed on to this day.

Access

The temple stands in Nakamachi, Utsunomiya, near latitude 36.56°N and longitude 139.89°E, close to the center of the city. It can be reached on foot or by bus from JR Utsunomiya Station or Tobu-Utsunomiya Station, with a calm townscape spreading around it. It is best to confirm whether viewing is possible, the opening hours, and whether the temple treasure is on display through official information before visiting.

Best season

As a city temple it can be visited throughout the year. The season of fresh green leaves and the quiet deepening of autumn are especially good for savoring its calm atmosphere. Because the schedule of services and events may change, checking ahead is reassuring if you wish to visit in stillness.

Did you know?

💡 While the temple name is Myōkin-ji, its mountain name is Hōkō-zan and its cloister name is Seikō-in. The enshrined Oshidori Great Mandala is said to be in the authentic hand of Nichiren, and even its name, taken from the mandarin duck (oshidori), hints at the devotion surrounding the dharma treasure handed down here.
