History
According to temple tradition, Chōrin-ji was founded in 1448, in the mid-Muromachi period, and has guarded its Buddhist teachings in Ashikaga for more than five centuries. The Sōtō school is a branch of Zen that places seated meditation at the heart of its practice, and Chōrin-ji carries on that teaching. Ashikaga developed in medieval times as a place tied to the Ashikaga clan, and later as a center of textile production, and the temple has witnessed these changing chapters of local history. For a detailed account of its origins and treasures, check the notices on the grounds or official sources when you visit.
