Overview
Jōkō-ji is a Jōdo-sect (Pure Land) Buddhist temple in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture. Rooted in the farmland of the Kantō Plain, it carries on the Pure Land teaching of chanting the nembutsu in faith of Amida Buddha. History
The temple is said to have been founded in 1311, tracing its origins to the very end of the Kamakura period. The Jōdo school was founded by the priest Hōnen, who spread the teaching that anyone can be saved by chanting Namu Amida Butsu.
