Its mountain name is Nyoi-zan, and its principal image is the Diamond Realm Dainichi Nyorai (Kongōkai Dainichi). History

Henjō-ji is said to date back to 1338, during the Nanboku-chō period, with Ashikaga Motouji, who governed the Kantō region, honored as its founder. Later, Nakamura Tokinaga moved it near its present location and is revered as the restorer. Belonging to the Chisan branch of the Shingon school, it bears the mountain name Nyoi-zan and enshrines as its principal image the Diamond Realm Dainichi Nyorai, regarded in esoteric Buddhism as the cosmic, fundamental Buddha. The temple's historical depth lies in combining a warlord-linked founding with its character as an esoteric temple. For a detailed account of its origins, check official information when you visit.

Did you know?

💡 The principal image, the Diamond Realm Dainichi Nyorai, is regarded in Shingon esoteric Buddhism as the fundamental Buddha symbolizing the cosmos itself. Ashikaga Motouji, credited as the founder, was the first Kamakura kubō, head of the Muromachi shogunate's governing office for the Kantō region, and history enthusiasts may find it striking that his name is inscribed in this temple's origins.
