Overview

Sabigawa Dam is a power-generation dam built at Momura in Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture. It was created by damming the Ko-Sabigawa, a minor right tributary of the Sabigawa, which is itself a left tributary of the Hōki River in the Naka River system, holding a quiet reservoir deep in the mountains. Standing an impressive 104 meters tall, it is one of the key facilities managed by TEPCO Renewable Power. Set deep in the mountains of Nasushiobara, it is a little-known spot where a dynamic engineering structure and untouched nature exist side by side.

Highlights

  • An imposing dam wall standing 104 meters tall
  • The origin of the unusually read river name Sabigawa
  • Its character as a power-only dam on the Ko-Sabigawa
  • The quiet reservoir scenery deep in the Nasushiobara mountains

History

Completed in 1994, this is a relatively new dam built solely for hydroelectric power generation. It dams the slender flow of the Ko-Sabigawa, a branch stream within the Naka River system, and its somewhat complex position within that river network is part of its technical interest. It is managed by TEPCO Renewable Power and supports the region's renewable energy supply. For details on how it generates power and on water releases, please consult official information.

Access

The dam lies in the mountainous area of Momura, Nasushiobara, near 36.99 degrees north and 139.86 degrees east. Access is essentially by car from JR Nasushiobara Station or the Shiobara hot-spring district, with long mountain-road sections that call for careful driving. The surroundings are rich in nature but far from populated areas, so it is wise to prepare fuel, food, and drink before setting out. Be sure to confirm which areas are accessible and whether viewing is permitted through official information.

Best season

From the fresh greenery of early summer to the autumn foliage is the best time to enjoy the mountain scenery. Autumn is especially fine, when the surrounding peaks turn color and the reservoir mirrors the reds and golds. In winter, snow and icy roads may restrict access, so check road conditions before you go.

  3. 3Enjoy the mountain nature and seasonal scenery such as autumn leaves
  4. 4End the trip with an onsen tour of the Shiobara hot springs on the way back

Did you know?

💡 The dam takes its name from the unusually read Sabigawa river, whose characters might otherwise be read differently. Its 104-meter height makes it a notable structure for a mountain power-generation dam, and together with the curious reading of its name it is a memorable one. The nearby Shiobara hot springs mean you can combine a visit with an onsen trip to this hidden waterscape.
