Mount Daisyo

Overview

Mount Daisyo (Daisho-yama) is a 282-meter peak straddling the boundary of Ashikaga and Sano in Tochigi Prefecture. Also known as Takanosu-yama, it ranks 95th among the Hundred Famous Mountains of Tochigi selected by the Shimotsuke Shimbun, and 35th among the Hundred Famous Mountains of Ashikaga. Though modest in height, the giant characters for「大」(large) and「小」(small) displayed on its slope are visible from the valley below, making it a beloved local landmark and an easy, rewarding hike for families and day-trippers.

History

The characters「大」and「小」that give the mountain its name were mounted on the slope so they could be seen from the foot of the hill, and they have watched over the community for generations. The city of Ashikaga distinguishes the southern peak as Daisyo and the northern peak as Myogi, and a traverse linking the two is a popular way to enjoy the ridge.
