Overview

Mount Daisyo (Daisho-yama) is a 282-meter peak straddling the boundary of Ashikaga and Sano in Tochigi Prefecture. Also known as Takanosu-yama, it ranks 95th among the Hundred Famous Mountains of Tochigi selected by the Shimotsuke Shimbun, and 35th among the Hundred Famous Mountains of Ashikaga. Though modest in height, the giant characters for「大」(large) and「小」(small) displayed on its slope are visible from the valley below, making it a beloved local landmark and an easy, rewarding hike for families and day-trippers.

Highlights

  • The hillside characters「大」and「小」visible from the valley
  • A ridge traverse linking Daisyo in the south with Myogi in the north
  • A friendly hill ranked 95th in Tochigi and 35th in Ashikaga
  • Views over the Ryomo plain from near the summit

History

The characters「大」and「小」that give the mountain its name were mounted on the slope so they could be seen from the foot of the hill, and they have watched over the community for generations. The city of Ashikaga distinguishes the southern peak as Daisyo and the northern peak as Myogi, and a traverse linking the two is a popular way to enjoy the ridge. Its selection among the Hundred Famous Mountains of both Tochigi and Ashikaga has made it well known to hikers from near and far. For a fuller account of its background, consult the official local information.

Access

The mountain spans the Onumata and Nishiba districts of Ashikaga and the Akami district of Sano, sitting near the center of the Ryomo region. Hikers typically reach it by taxi or bus from stations on the Ryomo or Tobu lines, and a parking area serves the trailhead. Please confirm the latest trailhead access, transport options and parking availability through official sources.

Best season

Autumn through winter, when the air is clear and distant views open up, is especially rewarding. The budding of spring and the fresh greenery of early summer make for pleasant walking too, while summer calls for protection against heat and insects. Because this low mountain offers little shade along some stretches, carrying water and a hat is wise in any season.
