Overview

Tochigi Nakagawa Aquatic Park is a freshwater aquarium on the banks of the Naka River in Sarado, Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture. Attached to the Tochigi Prefectural Fisheries Experiment Station, it comprises an aquarium focused on river fish and an associated park. Saltwater fish are kept here too, but the chance to meet familiar freshwater creatures is its great appeal.

Highlights

  • Exhibits of Naka River freshwater fish
  • Saltwater fish section
  • A place of learning attached to a fisheries station
  • The adjoining park

History

The aquarium opened on July 15, 2001. Attached to the Tochigi Prefectural Fisheries Experiment Station, it is accredited as a museum-equivalent facility under the Museum Act by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It is also counted as one of the "Tochigi no Hyakusama."

Access

The site is in Sarado, Otawara City (the former village of Yuzukami), on the banks of the Naka River. Please check maps and official information for detailed routes before visiting.

Best season

Because the exhibits are mainly indoors, it can be enjoyed year-round regardless of weather. For families, the daytime hours of the warmer season, matching the river-play season, are especially recommended.
