Okunikkō

Overview

Okunikko is a colloquial name for a secluded, unspoiled area in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, stretching from the Nikko mountain range to the vicinity of Konsei Pass. Centered on the area upstream of Ryuzu Falls, it reaches an elevation of around 1,500 meters and is recognized as one of Japan's 100 remote and unspoiled regions.

History

The name Okunikko has become the common designation for the secluded area stretching from the Nikko mountain range to Konsei Pass. In its narrowest sense it refers to national forest land within this area bearing the address 'Okunikko,' though the term is also used more broadly to include the shore of Lake Chuzenji, and at times even the western foot of Konsei Pass in neighboring Katashina Village, Gunma Prefecture.
