History
Yunishigawa Dam is a relatively recent dam whose project began in 1982. Built on the Yunishigawa in the Tone River system as a large structure about 119 meters high, it was created to serve roles in flood control and water use. The Yunishigawa hot spring district of Nikko is known as a remote village of hidden springs, and the fact that a dam was planned and constructed to make use of such a deep-mountain river tells part of the history of water-resource use in this region. For the detailed course of the project and the date of completion, official information will give a more accurate picture.
Access
The dam lies in the Yunishigawa hot spring district of Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, at roughly 36.94 degrees north and 139.66 degrees east. Access is generally by following the roads leading to the Yunishigawa hot springs, with further travel by bus or car from the nearest railway station. As this is a mountainous area with narrow stretches of road and possible winter snow, seasonal preparation and a check of the latest transport information are recommended.
Best season
The dazzling fresh greenery of early summer and the autumn foliage that colors the valley are especially fine. The mountain colors reflected on the reservoir surface are a rewarding sight. Winter brings deep snow, and you can enjoy the charm of snow country such as the kamakura snow-hut events of Yunishigawa; ample preparation for icy roads and snowfall is essential.
