
Overview
Shiobara Dam is a gravity dam built on the Hōki River of the Naka River system in Sekiya, Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture. With an imposing structure 60 meters high and 240 meters long along the crest, it serves both flood control and irrigation. It pairs well with the scenic gorges of the Shiobara area.

History
Construction of the dam began in 1969 and was completed in 1978. Its catchment area is 119.5 square kilometers, and when full it floods about 41 hectares of land and can store roughly 8,760 thousand cubic meters of water.

The dam lies in Tochigi Prefecture, along the Hōki River in Sekiya, Nasushiobara. It stands within the gorge leading toward the Shiobara hot spring district, so please check maps and official information for detailed routes and whether visits are permitted.
Best season
Early summer with fresh greenery and autumn with colored foliage are recommended. The tints on the mountainsides stand out along the gorge, and the reservoir blends beautifully with the surrounding nature.
