Overview

Reizan-ji is a Shingon-sect Buddhist temple located in the Ōuchi area of Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka City. Its mountain name is 鷲峰山, and its principal image is the Thousand-Armed Kannon (Senju Kannon). The temple holds the 21st sacred site of the Suruga Sanjūsan Kannon (Thirty-Three Kannon) pilgrimage and the 7th sacred site of the Suruga Nana Kannon (Seven Kannon) pilgrimage.

Highlights

  • A temple traditionally said to have been founded in 749 (Tenpyō-shōhō 1)
  • Principal image is the Thousand-Armed Kannon
  • 21st sacred site of the Suruga Sanjūsan Kannon pilgrimage
  • 7th sacred site of the Suruga Nana Kannon pilgrimage

History

According to temple tradition, Reizan-ji was founded in the first year of the Tenpyō-shōhō era (749). As a Shingon-sect temple enshrining the Thousand-Armed Kannon as its principal image, it has long welcomed visitors as one of the sacred sites along Suruga-area Kannon pilgrimage routes.

Access

The temple stands near a residential area in the Ōuchi district of Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka City, so checking the nearest bus route beforehand makes it easier to find. As a stop visited by pilgrims on the Suruga Kannon pilgrimage, pilgrimage maps or guides can also be a useful reference.

Best season

With a history said to stretch back to its founding in 749, the temple has welcomed pilgrims year-round ever since. If your purpose is the pilgrimage itself, timing hardly matters, though it's worth checking in advance whether goshuin stamps are being issued that day.

  2. 2Pass through the gate and notice the plaque bearing the mountain name 鷲峰山
  3. 3Pay respects to the Thousand-Armed Kannon enshrined in the main hall, reflecting on the merit attributed to its many arms
  4. 4Since the temple holds two pilgrimage numbers at once, ask at the temple office whether a goshuin stamp is available
