History

The garden was established in 1890 and opened in its present form on July 15, 1952. In 1954, it was designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument of Japan. In 2012, it was designated as part of the Izu Peninsula Geopark, further recognizing its landform features. It has also been selected as one of the '100 Best Historical Parks in Japan.'
