History

As the main stream of the first-class Oi River system, it has long nourished Shizuoka Prefecture. In the Edo period it was a notorious hard point of the Tokaido road, crossed on the shoulders of porters because there was neither bridge nor ferry. Its drainage basin spans roughly 1,280 square kilometers.

Access

The river runs north to south through Shizuoka Prefecture, rising at Mount Aino in the Southern Alps and emptying into Suruga Bay. Because various sightseeing spots are scattered along its course, please check maps and official information for routes and transport to your destination.

Best season

Spring to early summer, when the fresh greenery dazzles, and autumn, when the leaves turn, are especially beautiful. If you plan to combine gorge sightseeing upstream with a steam-locomotive trip, choose a season with settled weather.
