Overview

Adakaya Shrine stands in Higashi-izumo, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. For most of the time it is a quiet, tree-shaded sanctuary, yet it is widely known as a key stage of the Horan-enya, the grand boat festival held only once every ten years. Set in the eastern part of the old Izumo lands near Lake Shinji, it remains a living center of local faith and traditional ceremony.

Highlights

  • A starting point of the Horan-enya boat festival held every ten years
  • A quiet guardian grove in eastern Izumo near Lake Shinji
  • Linked to one of Japan's three great boat rituals
  • A place of prayer where faith and living tradition endure

History

Adakaya Shrine has long been venerated on this site, carrying on the rich tradition of Izumo ritual. Its greatest fame comes from its deep connection with the Matsue Joyama Inari periodic procession festival, popularly called Horan-enya. Once every ten years the deity of Joyama Inari Shrine travels to Adakaya Shrine and back over several days in a magnificent flotilla of decorated boats, an event counted among Japan's three great boat rituals. For the shrine's full history and the date of the next festival, please refer to official information.

Access

The shrine lies in Higashi-izumo, on the eastern side of Lake Shinji in Matsue City. It sits across the Ou plain to the east of central Matsue, and a bus or taxi from the nearest railway station is convenient. Many visitors also come by car; please confirm parking availability in advance through official sources.

Best season

The shrine can be visited quietly throughout the year, but in the years when Horan-enya is held the whole district fills with rare excitement. Checking the schedule of this once-a-decade festival before you travel lets you witness a spectacle few people ever see. For an ordinary visit, the deep greenery of early summer and the clear air of autumn are especially pleasant.

Did you know?

💡 The name Horan-enya is said to come from the chant sung by the rowers as they pull the oars. Because the festival returns only once in ten years, even local residents may take part in it just a handful of times in their lives, which makes it a treasured inheritance.
