Overview

Nishinoshima is one of the Dozen Islands in the Oki archipelago in the Sea of Japan, and the second largest of the Oki Islands. With an area of 55.97 km², it is administered by the town of Nishinoshima in Shimane Prefecture. Much of the island lies within Daisen-Oki National Park.

History

Nishinoshima is the main island of the town of Nishinoshima in Oki District. A branch office of the Oki administrative office is located in the Uragō district of the island, making it the center of the Dozen area in the western Oki archipelago. The island's name refers to "west."

Access

The island lies in the Oki archipelago off Shimane Prefecture; visitors should check ferry and other transport schedules from the mainland before traveling.

Best season

As a sea-girt island, it is best visited in seasons when the sea is calm and the weather mild.
