Shinjiko Nature Museum Gobius
A aquarium in Shimane — meet the creatures of the sea.
Overview
The Shinjiko Nature Museum Gobius in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, is a hands-on aquarium devoted to freshwater and brackish-water creatures. Opened on April 21, 2001, and a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums, it takes a different tack from seaside aquariums by shining a light on the fish and other animals that inhabit the rivers and lakes of the San'in region, above all Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi. Modest at first glance, its freshwater and brackish species prove surprisingly full of character, making it enjoyable for families and adults alike.

History
Gobius opened on April 21, 2001. Making the most of Shimane's setting between the brackish lagoons of Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi, it built its displays around the creatures of brackish waters where fresh and sea water mingle. The museum's name, Gobius, derives from the scientific name of the gudgeon-type gobies that are emblematic of the region, embedding a local view of the waterside right into its title. Since then it has been cherished as a place of experiential learning.
Access
The museum lies on the western shore of Lake Shinji in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, at roughly 35.45 degrees north and 132.86 degrees east. It is easy to reach from central Izumo or the Matsue direction, and traveling by car is convenient. Bus or taxi from the nearest station on the JR San'in Main Line is possible, but services are limited, so it is wise to check transport in advance. Confirm opening hours, closing days, and admission through official sources.
Best season
As an indoor facility it is comfortable to enjoy all year regardless of weather. If combining it with sightseeing around Lake Shinji, timing your visit to the lake's famous sunset and stepping out to watch the sundown after your tour makes for a fine plan.

Did you know?
💡 The name Gobius refers to the goby family, and Lake Shinji is also famed for brackish delicacies such as icefish and freshwater clams. An aquarium that casts local river and lake life, rather than marine fish, as its stars is rare nationwide, making this a place to rediscover the richness of the waters close to home.

孫を連れて行きました。宍道湖にすむ魚や生き物の展示が身近に感じられて面白かったです。地元の川や湖の生き物に詳しくなれ、孫も水槽に釘付けでした。
