Overview

Noki Shrine (Noki-jinja) stands in the Nogi district of Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture. Belonging historically to Ou district in old Izumo Province, it is counted among the Shikinaisha listed in the Engishiki register of the tenth century, and once held the rank of prefectural shrine. Set among quiet fields and low hills at the eastern edge of the Izumo plain, it is modest in scale yet preserves a deep layer of Izumo's ancient faith, offering visitors a calm and unhurried encounter with the shrine grounds.

Highlights

  • Ancient prestige as a Shikinaisha listed in the Engishiki
  • Calm shrine precincts befitting a former prefectural shrine
  • A setting in Ou district, a heartland of Izumo faith
  • A quiet, locally rooted atmosphere far from tourist crowds

History

Recorded as a Shikinaisha of Ou district in old Izumo Province, Noki Shrine has long served as a guardian shrine of its locality. Under the modern shrine ranking system it was designated a prefectural shrine (kensha), marking its standing. Ou district was the seat of the Izumo provincial government and a center of the region's political and religious life, and Noki Shrine formed part of that history. For details on its founding date and enshrined deities, please consult the on-site notices or official information.

Access

The shrine lies in Nogi, Yasugi, at roughly 35.40 degrees north and 133.22 degrees east. It sits in farmland inland from Yasugi Station on the JR San'in Main Line, where public transport is limited, so a rental car or taxi is the most practical way to reach it. As the surrounding rural roads can be winding, checking the location on a map beforehand is recommended. Confirm visiting hours and parking through official sources.

Best season

Surrounded by tranquil countryside, the shrine is especially lovely in early summer's fresh greenery and in autumn when the rice ripens, both fine times for a stroll on the grounds. Weekday mornings are ideal for those who wish to savor an ancient Izumo shrine away from crowds.
