Overview

Tachikue Gorge stretches for about two kilometers along the upper reaches of the Kando River in the southern part of Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. Sheer, oddly shaped crags and columnar rock walls line the river, and for this rugged yet beautiful scenery it is designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument under the name Tachikue. The surrounding area forms the Tachikue Gorge Prefectural Natural Park, making it one of Izumo's finest scenic spots to enjoy through the seasons.

History

Tachikue Gorge was carved over long ages as the flow of the Kando River wore away the rock. The soaring rock formations are so highly valued that the gorge is designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument of Japan under the name Tachikue. The surroundings are protected as the Tachikue Gorge Prefectural Natural Park, and the site has long been cherished as a sacred place where nature and faith come together. For details of the designation and its highlights, please refer to official information.

Access

The gorge lies in the southern part of Izumo City, along the upper course of the Kando River. It is reached by following the river south upstream from central Izumo, and coming by car is convenient. If using public transport, please check bus or taxi services from the nearest station through official sources in advance. Some stretches along the gorge have maintained walking paths.

Best season

The contrast of rock faces and rushing water is worth seeing all year, but early summer clad in fresh green and autumn when foliage colors the cliffs are especially fine. The budding of spring and winter, when the crisp air sets the rocks in sharp relief, each have their own appeal. When walking along the river, please take care of your footing and the weather.
