Overview
Hamada Gokoku Shrine stands on the ruins of Hamada Castle, also known as Kameyama Castle, in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. As a Gokoku shrine it enshrines roughly 23,000 spirits of the war dead who came from the old province of Iwami, and it has long been cherished by local people as a place of remembrance and quiet prayer. Because it sits on the elevated castle grounds, the approach still bears stone walls and the greenery of the castle hill, letting you combine a gentle historical walk with your visit. This is a shrine where calm rather than grandeur leaves the strongest impression, and its position overlooking the town and sea makes it a fine place to pause on a journey.

History
The shrine was established to console the spirits of those from the Iwami region who lost their lives in the conflicts of the modern era. Its setting, Hamada Castle, was a hilltop castle built during the Edo period as the seat of the Hamada domain and was also called Kameyama Castle. After the castle had served its purpose, the surrounding castle hill remained a place that held the region's memory, and the Gokoku shrine came to be enshrined within it. Shimane is also home to Matsue Gokoku Shrine, so the eastern and western parts of the prefecture each keep watch over their honored spirits. For detailed history and the schedule of rites, please confirm through official sources.
Access
The shrine is located in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture, on the castle hill of the former Hamada Castle. From Hamada Station on the JR San-in Main Line, visitors usually head through the town toward the castle hill, on foot or using local transport. It is also relatively close to the interchanges near Hamada on the San-in Expressway, making a visit by car convenient. Because the grounds sit on high ground, the final approach includes slopes and stone steps. Please check current transport access and parking through official information.
Best season
The shrine can be visited throughout the year, but spring to early summer, when the castle hill turns lush green, and autumn, wrapped in clear air, are especially pleasant for a stroll. Cherry blossoms may be seen nearby in spring, letting you enjoy history and nature together. As the site is close to the sea, some days can be windy depending on the weather, so a light jacket is reassuring.

Did you know?
💡 As its name suggests, this Gokoku shrine is distinctive for honoring not a single hero but the collective spirits of many, often nameless, war dead. The enshrined spirits number around 23,000 and carry forward the memory of people from across the wide former province of Iwami. The very stage of a castle ruin quietly speaks of the passing of the ages.
