Overview

Yōmei-ji is a Sōtō Zen temple nestled in the hills of Tsuwano, in Kanoashi District, Shimane Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kakuō-zan. Standing on rising ground above one of western Japan's most beautiful castle towns, the temple's thatched main hall and forest-wrapped precincts embody the tranquil charm that has earned Tsuwano the nickname of a little Kyoto of the San'in region. Long revered as the family temple of the lords of Tsuwano, it invites visitors to slow down as they climb its quiet approach.

Highlights

  • A striking thatched-roof main hall set within quiet, forest-wrapped grounds
  • Six centuries of history, said to date from its founding in 1420 by lord Yoshimi Yorihiro
  • The dignified air of a temple that served as the daimyo family temple of Tsuwano
  • An atmospheric approach climbing the hillside above the castle town

History

Yōmei-ji was founded in 1420 by Yoshimi Yorihiro, lord of Tsuwano Castle, who installed the monk Getsuin as its founding abbot. It flourished thereafter as a Sōtō Zen temple and served for generations as the ancestral temple of the successive daimyo families who governed Tsuwano. The high standing granted by the ruling house is still felt in the halls and graves preserved within the grounds. For roughly six centuries it has quietly marked the spiritual history of the town.

Access

The temple sits on high ground in the inland town of Tsuwano, close to the border with Yamaguchi Prefecture (around 34.47°N, 131.77°E). Tsuwano Station on the JR Yamaguchi Line is the gateway to the town, and many visitors walk from the station, enjoying the castle-town streetscape along the way. Some sloping lanes and approach paths lead up to the temple, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please check official sources for current transport times and parking before your trip.

Best season

Early summer, when fresh greenery glows across the hills, and autumn, when the trees around the precincts turn color, are especially lovely. In late autumn the whole castle town of Tsuwano blazes with foliage, in beautiful harmony with the thatched main hall. Winter offers a serene, snow-dusted scene, but the mountain setting can be cold, so dress warmly.
