History
As part of the main stream of the first-class Hii River system in eastern Shimane, the Ohashi River has long carried the waters of Lake Shinji toward Nakaumi. Matsue developed as a castle town in the Edo period and became known as a city of water, and this river running through the center of its streets was for centuries a vital artery supporting boat traffic and the movement of people. The bridges that cross it were maintained and extended along with the town's growth as key links between the castle district and the far bank. For detailed history of flood control and the river itself, it is best to check official information.
Access
The Ohashi River runs through the center of Matsue City, and you can reach its banks within walking distance of Matsue Station on the JR San-in Main Line. Because it crosses the town from the Lake Shinji side toward Nakaumi, access from Matsue Castle and the surrounding sightseeing areas is also good. Several bridges span the river, and you can enjoy a waterside stroll from either bank. Please check the operation and business hours of pleasure boats and nearby facilities through official information.
Best season
Waterside walks can be enjoyed all year, but Matsue's watery scenery stretching from Lake Shinji to Nakaumi is especially striking in the seasons of beautiful sunsets and in the clear air of autumn into winter. Summer draws people seeking cool riverside air, while spring is ideal for walking in mild weather. As it can grow windy depending on the weather, dressing with care by the water makes for a more comfortable visit.
