History

In 2000, enormous pillars believed to date from the late Heian to Kamakura periods were unearthed within the precinct, drawing wide attention. They are thought to have supported the main hall of Izumo Shrine at that time, offering compelling evidence for the tradition that the shrine once soared to astonishing heights. The excavated relics have been designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan, testifying to the advanced building skills of the age.

Access

The site lies in Kizuki-higashi, Taisha-cho, Izumo City, with the area of Izumo Shrine forming its core. While you can sense the site as you worship within the sacred grounds, the extent open to viewing and the state of excavation vary by period, so please confirm details through official information before visiting.

Best season

If you come to combine worship with sightseeing, the clear-aired days of autumn to early winter and the fresh greenery of spring are especially pleasant.
