Overview

Nagara Shrine stands in Miidera-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Once also called Imahie-sha or Shingu-sha, it was revered as the guardian shrine of Onjo-ji (Mii-dera). Its former rank was that of a prefectural shrine (ken-sha). Sitting at the foot of the celebrated Mii-dera temple, it is widely known for its striking vermilion two-story gate (romon). The atmosphere of a historic temple town blends with a serene precinct backed by the mountain, making the shrine a fitting starting point for a walk through Otsu.

Highlights

  • A vivid vermilion two-story gate defining the temple-town scene
  • Its heritage as the guardian shrine of Onjo-ji (Mii-dera)
  • Origins said to trace back to the 667 move of the capital to Otsu-kyo
  • A calm precinct in harmony with Mount Nagara behind it

History

According to shrine tradition, its origins trace back to the year 667, to the transfer of the capital to Otsu-kyo under Emperor Tenji. For centuries it was venerated as the guardian shrine of Onjo-ji (Mii-dera), and was also known by names such as Imahie-sha and Shingu-sha. Bound closely to Mii-dera, it has been protected across the ages as a local guardian deity. Its former rank was prefectural shrine. For detailed origins and the enshrined deities, please refer to official information.

Access

The shrine is in Miidera-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, at roughly 35.01 degrees north and 135.86 degrees east. It can be reached from around JR Otsu Station or Miidera Station on the Keihan line, and is easy to combine on foot with a visit to Mii-dera (Onjo-ji). A walk along the Lake Biwa Canal from central Otsu is also atmospheric. Please confirm the latest transport details and routes from the nearest station through official information.

Best season

Spring, when cherry blossoms color the temple approach, and autumn, when the trees at the mountain's foot turn, are especially rewarding. The vermilion gate and the seasonal hues play off one another for photogenic scenery. Summer offers cool shade, and winter allows a quiet visit in crisp air. If combining with Mii-dera, an unhurried daytime visit in good light is recommended.
