Overview

Ogoto Shrine stands in the Ogoto district of Otsu City, on the western shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. Ranked historically as a gōsha (a district-level shrine), it served as the tutelary shrine of the local community. Its sacred crest is the dakimyoga, a stylized ginger-leaf motif. Set a little apart from the lively Ogoto hot-spring resort, it offers a quiet place of prayer worth pausing at when visiting the lakeside spa town.

Highlights

  • A district shrine long serving as guardian of Ogoto
  • The auspicious dakimyoga (ginger-leaf) sacred crest
  • A tranquil grove near Ogoto hot springs on Lake Biwa's west shore
  • A calm space of prayer away from the resort bustle

History

The shrine was designated a gōsha, a district shrine, and has long been revered as the guardian deity of the Ogoto settlement. Its crest, the dakimyoga, is an emblem handed down at the shrine since old times. For precise founding dates and the enshrined deities, it is best to check official sources or the on-site history board, but the shrine clearly shares its history with the lakeside community of Ogoto.

Access

The shrine lies in the Ogoto area of Otsu City, on the western shore of Lake Biwa, at around 35.094°N, 135.897°E. The nearest station is Ogoto-Onsen on the JR Kosei Line; from there, head toward the hot-spring quarter to reach the shrine. By car, the interchanges along the Kosei road are convenient. Please confirm opening hours and parking through official information.

Best season

The shrine can be visited quietly in every season. The New Year hatsumode, the deep green of early summer, and the clear crisp air of autumn all make for a pleasant visit. If pairing it with the Ogoto hot springs, dropping by before or after a bath is ideal.
