History

Shinozu Shrine stands in the Nakasho district of Otsu, an old shrine that has walked alongside its community over the years. During the Edo period this area flourished as the castle town of the Zeze domain, with Zeze Castle on the shore of Lake Biwa at the heart of its politics and daily life. A gate connected to that Zeze Castle is said to have been relocated to the shrine and handed down as its front gate. Even after the castle itself disappeared, this gate has been treasured as a rare relic preserving its likeness. The main hall conveys the nagare-zukuri form to this day, allowing visitors to recall the past through both local history and architecture. For a detailed account, please consult on-site guidance or official sources.
