History
Yabase Kihan Island was created as part of efforts to preserve the water quality and environment of Lake Biwa. Its name derives from Yabase no Kihan, one of the Eight Views of Omi, recalling the historic lakeside scenery where ferry boats once crossed between Yabase in Kusatsu and Otsu on the opposite shore. After development it was opened as a park and has since become a cherished hub for recreation.
Access
The island lies in Yabase-cho, Kusatsu City, on the southern waters of Lake Biwa (around 35.0 N, 135.9 E). It can be reached by bus or car from JR Minami-Kusatsu or Seta stations. By car, the Kusatsu and Seta area interchanges of the Meishin Expressway are convenient, making it easy to reach from Kyoto and Osaka as well. As the island is linked to the mainland by bridge, you can cross directly by car or bicycle. Check service schedules and parking through official information.
Best season
For time by the lake, spring into early summer with its refreshing breezes, and autumn, are the most comfortable. These seasons suit picnics on the lawns and open spaces, or riding the cycling paths. Summer bustles with water play and outdoor activities, while winter offers crisp air and clear views of the mountains across the water. The sunset sinking into Lake Biwa is another highlight.
