Overview

The Lake Biwa Museum is a prefectural museum on the Karasuma Peninsula along the shore of Lake Biwa in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Under the theme of the relationship between the lake and people, it introduces the nature and culture of Lake Biwa, the largest and oldest lake in Japan, and ranks among the largest lake-themed museums in the country. Its varied exhibits, including a dedicated freshwater aquarium, make it a beloved destination known affectionately as "Biwahaku."

Highlights

  • The giant Lake Biwa catfish, a beloved symbol
  • Full-scale replica of the Maruko-bune boat
  • Varied exhibition rooms renewed in 2020

History

The museum was founded and opened on 20 October 1996, with the building designed by Nikken Sekkei. In 2020, a renovation of its exhibition rooms carried out over three phases was completed, giving the galleries a full renewal.

Access

It sits on the Karasuma Peninsula, which juts into Lake Biwa in Kusatsu City, right by the lakeside waters. As it is on a peninsula, it is best to check maps and official information for details on public transport, driving routes, and parking.

Best season

The daytime hours of spring and autumn are pleasant for the lakeside scenery, and because the exhibits are mainly indoors, the museum can be enjoyed year-round regardless of the weather.
