Overview
Hyozu Taisha is an ancient shrine in Yasu, Shiga Prefecture. Listed in the Engishiki register of shrines, it ranks among the prestigious Myojin Taisha, the highest tier of officially recognized shrines, and its former rank was that of a prefectural shrine. Of the roughly fifty shrines nationwide that enshrine the deity Hyozu, only a handful are counted as Myojin Taisha, a mark of its deep pedigree. In 2015 it was recognized as a component cultural property of the Japan Heritage story of Lake Biwa and its waterside landscape, and its serene precinct with a fine garden welcomes visitors.

Counted among the Engishiki shrines of Omi Province, it possesses a long history and has drawn local devotion for centuries. On April 24, 2015, it was certified as a component cultural property of Japan Heritage, bringing renewed attention to its value.

The fresh green of early summer and the crimson foliage of autumn make the garden especially rewarding. For those who wish to gaze calmly at the garden, spring and autumn, when the seasons shift, are recommended. Please check official sources for festivals and garden opening times.
