Overview

Kuwanomi-dera Temple is a temple of the Tendai school in Azuchi, Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture. Standing on the slopes of Mount Kinugasa, it enshrines Yakushi Nyorai (the Healing Buddha) and is also known as Kuwamine Yakushi. The quiet mountain temple has long been cherished as a sacred site of Yakushi worship.

History

According to temple tradition, Kuwanomi-dera was founded in 677 by the monk Joe. It is counted among the pilgrimage stations of the 49 Sacred Sites of Saigoku Yakushi and the Lake Biwa 108 Pilgrimage Sites, and its precincts preserve a structure designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Access

The temple sits in Azuchi, Omihachiman City, reached by climbing stone steps up the mid-slope of Mount Kinugasa. As the approach is a steady uphill walk, comfortable shoes are recommended. Please check maps and official information for detailed routes.

Best season

Early summer, with its fresh green foliage, and autumn, when the mountain turns to crimson, are especially rewarding. The clear air of early morning makes the climb up the stone steps all the more pleasant.
