History
In the era when the coal mines around Imari flourished, the port was used to ship out coal, and it was designated a Major Port in 1951. Coal accounted for the majority of the cargo handled at that time. After the mines closed, an industrial park was developed around the port and the emphasis shifted to importing and exporting manufactured goods. In recent years a container terminal has been built, making the port a hub for container transport with the Asian region.
