Overview

Oho Tenmangu is a Tenmangu shrine located in Yamato-cho, Saga City, Saga Prefecture, standing in the western area along the upper Kase River. The shrine grounds are said to overlap with the former site of Oho Castle, a Japanese castle that once stood here, giving the site a layered history beyond that of an ordinary shrine.

Highlights

  • Shrine grounds said to overlap with the former site of Oho Castle
  • Location in the western area along the upper Kase River
  • Rows of Oho clan gravestones remaining around the precinct
  • The southern area once home to Chozen-ji, the Oho clan's family temple

History

To the south of the former castle stood Chozen-ji, said to have been the Oho clan's family temple, and rows of gravestones belonging to the Oho clan lineage still remain around the shrine precinct today. The overlapping traces of a castle, a clan temple, and a shrine on the same ground reflect the depth of this area's local history.

Best season

The shrine can be visited year-round, though spring through early summer, when the surrounding rural scenery turns green, and the clear air of autumn are both pleasant times for a walk around the grounds.
