Highlights
- ●A Class A river system flowing through both Nara and Osaka Prefectures into Osaka Bay
- ●Named after Yamato Province, the ancient region of its upper watershed
- ●Once ranked as the most polluted Class A river in Japan between 2004 and 2006
- ●Recognized in 2024 as the river with the greatest water quality improvement in Japan over the previous decade
History
In 1704, the Yamato River underwent a major channel realignment that reshaped its course. Previously, its flow ran north from the confluence with the Ishikawa River, joining the Shirinashi River before reaching the sea; the reconfiguration set the river on its present route. In the early 2000s, the river gained the unwelcome distinction of being the most polluted Class A river in the country. Since then, the installation of large-capacity water treatment facilities together with sustained cleanup efforts by local governments and residents have steadily restored its water quality.
Access
The Yamato River flows from Nara Prefecture into Osaka Prefecture, and near its mouth it forms the natural boundary between the cities of Osaka and Sakai before reaching Osaka Bay.
Best season
As water quality has improved, sweetfish (ayu) and eels have returned to the river, making its banks worth visiting across the seasons.
