Overview

Hattori Ryokuchi Park is a large park spread across hilly terrain in Toyonaka, in northern Osaka Prefecture. Officially named the "Osaka Prefectural Hattori Ryokuchi," it brings together a botanical garden, an open-air concert hall, and a museum of old farmhouses within one green space, making it one of the prefecture's leading urban parks.

Highlights

  • The Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses, gathering relocated traditional houses from around Japan
  • The Hattori Ryokuchi Arboretum, a botanical garden for plant displays and learning
  • The Hattori Ryokuchi Open-Air Concert Hall, used for concerts and events
  • The Hattori Ryokuchi Athletics Field, which also hosts track and field meets

History

The park has been selected for both the "100 Best Urban Parks in Japan" and the "100 Best Historical Parks in Japan" lists. Its best-known feature is the Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses, which gathers relocated traditional houses from different regions of Japan so visitors can compare rural building styles side by side. A youth hostel once operated inside the park but closed at the end of August 2011.

Access

The park sits in the Hattori Ryokuchi/Jinai area of Toyonaka City. Because its facilities — including the botanical garden, concert hall, and athletics field — are spread across a wide, hilly site with several separate entrances, it helps to check the entrance and route for whichever facility you plan to visit.

Best season

With flower beds, a walking path known as the "Flower Road," bamboo groves, and ponds, the park offers greenery and blossoms across the seasons. It's worth checking current seasonal information to see which area is at its best when you plan to visit.

Did you know?

💡 "Hattori" is simply the local place name for this part of Toyonaka, while "ryokuchi" is a generic Japanese term for a green space that is also used for many other parks — so it's worth remembering the full name "Hattori Ryokuchi" to avoid confusing it with other green spaces.
