Overview

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is located on Kaigandori in Minato Ward, Osaka, close to Tempozan on the shore of Osaka Bay, right next to the Tempozan Ferris Wheel. It is a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is accredited as a museum-equivalent facility under the Museum Act administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

History

The aquarium opened on July 20, 1990, and was recognized as one of the largest public aquariums in the world at the time of its opening. It was designed by architect Peter Chermayeff, and the building received the Public Buildings Award.

Access

It is about a five-minute walk from Osakako Station on the Osaka Municipal Subway Chuo Line, directly beside the Tempozan Ferris Wheel, making it easy to combine with a stroll along the Kaigandori waterfront.

Best season

Since the exhibits are mostly indoors, Kaiyukan can be enjoyed year-round; visitor numbers tend to rise during summer holidays and the New Year period, so arriving with some time to spare is advisable.
