History
From the 15th to the 19th century, Shuri Castle was the political and diplomatic center of the Ryukyu Kingdom. After its buildings were lost during the Second World War, it was reconstructed in 1992 with pillars, walls, and tiles in the signature vermilion. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2000, and wooden reconstruction of the main hall and other structures is now underway.
Access
The castle stands in the Shuri district of Naha and is maintained as Shurijo Castle Park. It is reachable by public transport from central Naha; check maps and official sources for detailed routes and open areas.
Best season
Okinawa is mild year-round, and the comfortable temperatures of spring and autumn suit outdoor walks well. Seeing the ongoing reconstruction at different stages is part of the appeal.
