Overview

Minamikojima is one of the uninhabited islets that make up the Senkaku Islands, also known by the alternate name Torishima. It is currently under Japan's effective control, though the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan) also claim sovereignty over it; administratively it falls under Tonoshiro Senkaku, Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture.

Highlights

  • One of the uninhabited islets making up the Senkaku Islands
  • Two elevated points, Kentourei at 139 meters and Boshihou at 89 meters
  • The roughly 200-meter-wide Olive Gate strait separating it from Kitakojima
  • A small islet covering about 0.40 square kilometers

History

As one of the islets forming the Senkaku group, Minamikojima is separated from neighboring Kitakojima by a strait known as the Olive Gate, roughly 200 meters wide and 150 meters long. The islet has two elevated points, Kentourei at 139 meters and Boshihou at 89 meters, and covers an area of about 0.40 square kilometers.

Access

This is an uninhabited islet and not a place the general public can land on. Entry into the surrounding waters is also subject to administrative rules, so anyone considering a visit or approach should check the latest information from the relevant authorities.

Best season

Since general access is not anticipated, there is no established "best season" for visitors. It's worth keeping in mind that the surrounding waters lie in an area of Okinawa prone to typhoons.

💡 The islet is known by different names depending on the country or region; in China it has also been called Dashe Dao or Niaoyu (Bird Island). China's State Oceanic Administration is said to have formally designated the name "Nanxiao Dao" on March 3, 2012, as part of standardized naming for features associated with the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands.
