Mount Gusuku

Overview

Mount Gusuku, locally called Gusuku-yama and nicknamed Tatchu outside the island, rises 172.2 meters at the center of Iejima, an island northwest of the main Okinawa Island. Its striking conical shape makes it the highest point and unmistakable symbol of the otherwise flat island.

History

Because Mount Gusuku is clearly visible from Okinawa Island and the East China Sea, it has served as a nautical landmark since ancient times, appearing on medieval-era nautical charts. Islanders have long revered it as a sacred site, and legend holds that a footprint left by the mighty folk hero Chikara Tannapa remains at its summit.

💡 The nickname Tatchu is used mainly by visitors from outside the island, while locals simply call it Gusuku. Though only 172 meters tall, the mountain is prominent enough to be clearly seen from the Motobu Peninsula and Sesoko Island across the water.
