History
Because Mount Gusuku is clearly visible from Okinawa Island and the East China Sea, it has served as a nautical landmark since ancient times, appearing on medieval-era nautical charts. Islanders have long revered it as a sacred site, and legend holds that a footprint left by the mighty folk hero Chikara Tannapa remains at its summit.
Access
Iejima is reached by ferry from Motobu Port on the Motobu Peninsula. Mount Gusuku stands near the center of the island, accessible from Iejima Port on foot, by bicycle, or by rental car. A walking path and stairway lead to the summit. As schedules and travel times vary, please confirm current details through official sources.
Best season
Spring through early summer and autumn are ideal, when clear skies and seas make the summit views their finest. In summer the sun is strong, so bring a hat and plenty of water for the climb.
