Overview
Mount Omoto is a 525-meter peak in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture, generally regarded as the highest mountain in Okinawa. Known locally by the nickname "Ishigaki Fuji," it has long been called "Umutu-daki" in the Yaeyama language.
Highlights
- ●Views from the summit of what is considered Okinawa's highest peak
- ●A well-balanced silhouette that earned it the nickname 'Ishigaki Fuji'
- ●A long recorded history dating back to the 'Kyuyo' chronicle
- ●Status as part of a Place of Scenic Beauty shared with Kabira Bay
History
The Ryukyuan historical chronicle "Kyuyo," compiled during the Edo period, records this mountain under two different kanji spellings, 宇本嶽 and 宇茂登嶽, showing that it has long been referred to by mountain-related names. Today, Mount Omoto is designated, together with Kabira Bay, as a nationally recognized Place of Scenic Beauty.
Access
Roads lead from central Ishigaki Island toward the mountain area, and hiking trails allow visitors to head for the summit. Because trail conditions and required time can change, it is best to check current information with Ishigaki City or local tourist information offices before setting out.
Best season
Thanks to Ishigaki's subtropical climate, the mountain can be climbed year-round, though many hikers prefer cooler months over the intense sun and humidity of midsummer. Trails may be closed during typhoon season, so checking weather updates in advance is essential.
