Overview

Hate-no-hama is the collective name for three uninhabited islands made entirely of sand, floating about 100 kilometers west of Okinawa's main island and roughly 5 kilometers east off Kumejima. Belonging to the town of Kumejima, it forms part of the Okinawa Islands. Its brilliant white sandbars ringed by emerald-green sea are known as one of the landscapes that best represent Okinawa.

Highlights

  • Three uninhabited islets formed entirely of sand
  • Emerald-green sea encircling the sandbars on all sides
  • Pure white beaches with unobstructed views
  • Scenery used as a filming location for movies, TV programs and commercials

History

Hate-no-hama consists of three uninhabited islands, called from the one nearest Kumejima 'Menu-hama', 'Nakano-hama' and 'Hatinu-hama', which together are collectively named Hate-no-hama. Made only of sand, these islands have long been cherished as a scenic attraction symbolizing the seascapes of Okinawa. They have frequently served as a setting for filming, including the Shochiku film 'Tsuribaka Nisshi 11', as well as television programs, music videos and commercials.

Access

The islands lie about 5 kilometers east off Kumejima and are uninhabited, so reaching them is premised on travel over water starting from Kumejima. They sit roughly 100 kilometers west of Okinawa's main island.

Best season

Warm, clear-weather periods with calm seas are best for taking in the emerald-green water and white sand. As these are uninhabited islands, checking weather and sea conditions in advance is essential.
